Gamelan Degung is an Indonesian musical style that originated in the Sunda region of West Java. It is characterized by the use of a smaller ensemble of instruments and a more relaxed, melodic style of playing. This is embodied in the magical sound of Java sound playing.Â
The beautiful music of the Javanese orchestra combines simple elements to create intricate structures. This intense, shimmering sound fascinated and inspired Western musicians such as Claude Debussy and Erik Satie. Satie first heard a Javanese gamelan orchestra play at the Paris World's Exposition in 1889 and incorporated its hypnotic effect into his exotic work Gnossienne.
