Lotus leaves have the ability to make dirt roll off them. They therefore symbolize purity, faithfulness, creativity and enlightenment in much of Asia. The bright, brown speckled Seeds of the Lotus Flower carry this symbolism and are therefore often used for malas.
Malas are Prayer beads and are used for counting the recited mantras. At the same time, the concentration is deepened by manually moving the pearls. Following ancient Vedic tradition, a Japa Mala should have 108 pearls (9 x 12). The number 108 is sacred in Buddhism and Hinduism. For example, there are 108 volumes of the collected teachings of Buddha, many temples have 108 steps, and it is said that each person has 108 lives. And a mantra works after 108 repetitions.
