Singing Bowl Accessories
A singing bowl alone can not yet sound. For this it must be struck. For the attack, various sticks and mallets come into question. Their texture determines the sound of the bowl. For optimal sound propagation, the bowl is best placed on a singing bowl cushion. From the slipping of the singing bowl when striking protect rubber rings or rubberized felt rings, which are placed under the singing bowl. Protect your singing bowl from damage during transport with a soft protective cover.
Sticks with felt head
Felt is a very nice material for striking a bowl. It is available in various degrees of hardness and holds its shape permanently. A large, soft felt mallet produces lower notes than a small, hard felt mallet, which produces higher notes. The decisive factor is what sound you want to produce. In sound therapy, for example, high tones are used for the head area, while low tones are taken more for the abdominal area.
Ideally, one has at least 3 different large and hard felt mallets to be able to create different sound frequencies. Particularly practical are the double mallets from Peter Hess, which combine two felt mallets. It is available with soft or hard felt.
Leather coated mallets
These mallets are made of wood and wrapped with leather at the end. This type of mallet can make your singing bowl "sing". The rubbing of the outer bowl edge, however, requires some practice. The sound is all the more impressive for it. Compared to pure wooden mallets, the leather covered mallets produce a more beautiful sound. These mallets are available in different leather colors and sizes.
A particularly noble version is the Japanese red lacquer mallet.
Wooden mallet
Some singing bowls, such as the Japanese singing bowls, come standard with wooden mallets. The sound of wood on metal sounds too harsh for many people. They are more suitable for rubbing the edge of the bowl to make the bowl "sing".
In addition to simple wooden mallets, you can also find mallets made of ebony or oak. A particularly beautiful variant are the ebony mallets with textile.
Singing bowl cushions
For the sound to spread optimally, the bowl must stand freely. Helpful here is a base: a singing bowl cushion. It has the right firmness to allow optimal spread of the vibration. A pad that is too soft causes the singing bowl to sink in and hinders the spread of the sound. And on a hard base, it can come to disturbing background noise when striking the bowl.
Singing bowl cushions are available in many colors, sizes and designs: flat, thick and round, thick and angular. Chakra singing bowl pillows are especially popular. Japanese singing bowls usually come standard with a nice thick singing bowl cushion.
Rubber rings & felt rings
When a small or medium singing bowl is struck, it can easily slip due to the force of the strike. This is annoying and can be easily turned off. The fastest way to do this is to use suitable rings made of rubber. These are simply placed under the singing bowl and hold it firmly. The sound is not affected in any way.
These rings are available in red or black to fit many singing bowl sizes. Just as well work the bottom rubberized felt rings. They look more natural than the rubber rings.
Singing bowl bag & protective cover
For dust-free storage or transport of smaller singing bowls, small cloth bags from Nepal are ideal. They are nicely decorated, available in many colors and are closed with a fabric drawstring. Soft protective covers made of fleece ensure a safe transport of the precious bowls. The fluffy covers can also be used as a pad or cushion during sound massage.
